2nd January, 2023

Since we last posted life got pretty crazy…

We put our flat in London on the market; put an offer in on a house in Folkestone which fell through late in the process; moved into a rental and said goodbye to London; found a fantastic new home; moved into that; then spent the summer stripping walls, pulling up carpets and painting! All that being said, finding time to write on here became somewhat tricky.

However, that does not mean we didn’t spend the summer making the most of our amazing new surroundings, really getting to know our new home - we had to make sure Bailey never went bored and always had a new place to discover!

So with that in mind, expect a flurry of posts over the next few weeks as we play catch up and share some real gems. One of those was The Woolpack Inn, Warehorne - a sister pub to one of our locals, The Radnor Arms (more on that later!), and a member of the group of pubs established from the success of Rocksalt here in Folkestone.

We visited at the height of the heatwave, and to be honest, the thought of a roast in 30-odd degrees wasn’t exactly desirable - but with friends down, and having heard incredible things, we couldn’t turn down the opportunity… and trust me this was worth all the hype and then some.

Sitting opposite a local church, surrounded by rolling fields, this is your quintessential English country pub. With the heatwave in full force, we arrived to a full beer garden and a plethora of friends for Bailey to say hello to! Whilst he was busy sniffing out the surroundings, we decided to opt for the cooler climes of indoors - where we were seated by a (fortunately not being used) fireplace, with the open kitchen just behind us. The setting was almost hollywood movie-like… The sort of place you just don’t find in real life.

Given the wonderful setting, owners who are food-royality in Kent, we really had high hopes and all went in for the roast. The pictures don’t do it justice. Beautifully cooked, with veggies and potatoes served ‘family style’ this has to rank in the top 3 roasts we’ve enjoyed out. It really was faultless.

The calm of the inside was also great for little Bailey. This could easily have been the sort of place where they say ‘dogs welcome (outside)’, but instead the welcoming was wonderful - with staff offering water bowls and dog treats, as well as looking keen for a cuddle!

They have bedrooms above as well, which despite being only 25 minutes from our place, we are tempted to treat ourselves to a night away over the upcoming winter months - where we can imagine a roaring fire will greet us, along with some delicious food, great beers and an even better welcome.

Pints and Paws overall summary

  • What did we have? 4 Roast dinners; 2 half pints of Harvey’s Best Bitter; A lager shandy and a glass of rosé

  • How much did it cost? £100 including service

  • How would we describe it? A quintessential English country pub with a focus on incredible, locally sourced food and drink

  • Did Bailey enjoy himself? From sniffing the hedgerows as we walked up, to sniffing the many dogs in the beer garden, he was exhausted by the time we sat down - so he snoozed by our table throughout. We think he had a good time!
